I found this book to be very helpful in understanding all the features of InDesign. It's not really the type of book for spot references, but rather the appraoch of "let's start at the beginning and we'll walk you through the features, increasing in complexity as we move through the chapters". You get files to work with, and step-by-step exercises which employ your newly discovered skills. At the end of the exercises, it tells you what the result should be, so you can determine if you have effectively accomplished the goal.

This is a book for the beginner. I have used this same format for both Photoshop and Illustrator and found that I learned more features than students using other approaches. If you are interested in starting at the beginning and working your way through the software, this is a great book.

I used it in the evenings and found that after 4 weeks I had a good command of InDesign.
